Cortana IndiaIf you are in India and have already updated to Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1, you may be trying to get Alpha version of Cortana as promised by Microsoft. In case you haven’t figure it yet, Cortana’s Alpha version for at least India works only with “Speech” and “Phone language” set as English UK as seen in above screenshots. This is the only way you can get Cortana’s Alpha version working on your devices in India.

Microsoft has also posted about how to get Cortana Alpha in India, Canada and Australia.

In the App list, tap Settings Settings icon > Language. You should have one of the following languages installed as the first or only choice for your locale:

  • English (Australia)
  • English (Canada)
  • English (India)

Note

If you install a new language, you may need to restart your phone before you can set it to use that language.

In Settings > Region, make sure that Country/Region is set to the correct country/region for your locale:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • India

In Settings > Speech, set Speech language to the following settings for your locale:

  • For Australia, English (United Kingdom)
  • For Canada, English (United States)
  • For India, English (United Kingdom)

When your phone is set to the correct language, region, and Speech language, go to Cortana by pressing the Search Search icon button. You’ll see two Cortana acknowledgement screens, where you’ll need to review the info and accept the conditions for using the Cortana alpha version.

If you are still hell-bent on getting Cortana speaking English US, then you may need to set your region back to “US” again and follow these steps. I am quite happy with my phone finally set to “India” region after a long time, though.

New settings were found for Live Tile of Windows Phone store.
